Are you intimidated by fast, hot, fitness yoga?
YES? This Slow Yoga is adaptive to YOUR body. If you can breathe, YOU can do yoga! At my age, I have the experience and training to teach you slow movements that will safely strengthen, stretch, and mend your body. I can read your posture to help design and launch your practice into the healing process.
Are you afraid to do/try yoga because you think you’re not flexible enough?
YES? I will teach you how to use props (block, strap, blanket, etc…) to bring the floor to you, get into a pose differently, or simply move slower. Through my Slow Yoga classes, you will have choices and options to make your body work without pain during each movement. Pauses between the poses give you more time to practice awareness (interoception) in your body and mind. Listening to your bodily discomfort and feel good sensations, gives you information to make informed decisions about your health.
My name is Terri Rucker. After teaching elementary school and Adaptive P.E. to kids with Autism for 20 years, I started teaching Senior Yoga in 2008.
As a young adult, I was a competitive swimmer, gymnast, and tennis player. I was happiest when I was moving, just like I am today! Now that I am 57 years old, those deep backbends, headstands, and full splits don’t feel as good anymore. My own yoga practice has evolved into a serene soothing mindful movement session to avoid over stretching and injury. This is a transformative practice no matter when you start in your life. The purpose of this website is to tell you about Slow Yoga for Active Aging.
Based on research, practicing a slower style of yoga is a significant step towards improving your health and ultimately aging with grace.
I promise this will enhance your life! You will tone your nervous system so you can respond with grace in times of stress and bounce back with resilience. Here is a short list of the advantages of practicing Slow Yoga; reduced depression, stress, anxiety, pain, bodily tension, and weight gain. It will boost and improve immunity, sleep patterns, heart health, digestion, low back pain, and diabetes.
Tom (avid golfer, 75 years old)~ about Terri’s Silver Age Yoga Zoom classes 2020-2021
“I know Terri’s chair yoga classes have helped my flexibility – I can feel that every day, and certainly on the golf course. I know my balance is only going to become a bigger issue, so I like that it is part of my workout routine on a regular basis. The yoga aspect that surprised me is the breathing, and I have started to be more conscious of how that can help me in ways I never thought of before.”
Jane (Deputy District Attorney)~ about her in-person and Zoom yoga practice with Terri 2017-2021
“I love Terri’s calm smiling, encouraging approach. She has a reassuring voice. I love that her yoga IS slow. Terri’s yoga has a meditative quality for those of us who are open to a spiritual quality. These aspects of Terri’s yoga calms me, I feel stronger, and it encourages compassion in me for others and myself.”
Mary (Artist/Counselor)~ about Slow Yoga advantages 2018-2021
“I love the way Terri gives NEW cues to old moves-telling us, then asking us where we might be feeling it. Terri talks us through the poses in GREAT DETAIL so that if my eyes are closed, I’m still on track. Big Picture: She always talks us through how our yoga practice fits into the rest of our lives, ‘breathing in kindness, breathing out tightness’, etc… things I use throughout the day to improve my life.”
Virginia (Avid Volunteer)~ about Therapeutic Yoga 2021
“I have taken various yoga classes for 40+ years and Terri’s is the one that brings me the most benefit. I can do 3 classes with Terri M, T, W and not feel overworked or achy. There are subtle changes and I have been able to stop my heavy duty OA medication after 6 years, now, without crippling pain!!!!”
